Lancaster Lelliott 1794-1823

Lancaster was christened at New Shoreham, Sussex on 29 September 1794, the eldest child of Nicholas Lelliott and Ann Sawyer

On 11 November 1817 Lancaster married Lucy Ward at Broadwater, Sussex. Both bride and groom signed the register. Lucy was privately baptised in Henfield, Sussex in 1790, the daughter of Harry and Mary Ward.

In the coastguard records held at the Public Record Office, Kew, ref. ADM-175-1 & ADM-175-2, Lancaster started as a commissioned boatman on 17 December 1817 at PS Worthing. On 11 February 1818 he was moved to Littlehampton. On 23 November 1820 he was removed from Littlehampton preventive station to Bos-Castle, Cornwall for disobedience of orders and he was dismissed on 4 July 1821 for non-appearance. In 1821 his occupation in the baptismal register is recorded as cooper.

Lancaster was buried in Broadwater churchyard on 1 February 1823 aged 28. His wife did not remarry.

In the July 1838 Broadwater Poor Rate book Lucy is listed as the owner of 21 & 22 Chapel Street, Coach House which she rented out and the owner occupier of 23 Chapel Road shop & yard, 22 Field Row house and 23 Field Row shop & yard.

In 1841 census Lucy is recorded as a charwoman living in Field Row, Worthing with three of her children. In 1851 she was visiting her daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and John Puttick at 11 Saint Vincent Street, Portsea, Hampshire. In 1861 she was a pauper lodging at 13 Field Row, Worthing and in 1871 she was living with her daughter Mary Puttick at 24 Tidy Street, Brighton. Lucy died there, aged 87, on 4 September 1877. Her daughter registered her death.

    On 9 May 1843 Mary Ann married John Puttick at Broadwater. John's occupation was tide waiter and his abode was Portsmouth, Hampshire.

  3. Emily Lelliott christened 15 April 1821, Broadwater

    In 1847, at Brighton, Emily married Benjamin Beaman Kembury, a Corporal in the Scots Fiuleu Guards. Before her marriage Emily gave birth to two children:-

    • Ann Lelliott born 1840, Worthing
    • George Lelliott born 1842, Worthing

  4. Louisa Lelliott christened on 13 October 1822 at Brighton, Dorset Gardens, Wesleyan
